Somebody Like Me

February 9, 2025

How could God ever love—or even use—somebody like me? Whether it’s because of a past we regret, a failure we can’t forget, or a deep sense of inadequacy, many of us live in the shadow of shame. While we might believe Jesus forgives sin, we often struggle to walk in the freedom of that forgiveness.

Drawing from the encounter between Jesus and the paralyzed man at the pool of Bethesda in John 5, Pastor Jason Britt explores the source and symptoms of shame. He distinguishes between guilt (focusing on behavior) and shame (focusing on worth). Jesus’ question to the man—“Do you want to get well?”—is a direct challenge to anyone who has let their shame become their identity. Discover why God can’t fix who you pretend to be, but He can heal the real you when you confront your shame with the power of the gospel.
