Prayers to Pray Over Your Child

When you pray Scripture over your child, you align your prayers with God's heart for your child.

There is supernatural power in prayer. Praying for your child isn’t the last ditch effort; it’s the best thing you can do for them! Most of us want to pray for those we love, but sometimes we find ourselves at a loss for words. Here are five quick ideas and Scriptures you can pray over your child of any age.

  1. Confidence in God
God, I know You are so powerful. You created all the stars in the galaxy, the tallest mountains, and the deepest caverns. I know You also created my child. Ephesians 2:10 says, "We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.” My child is Your workmanship, and You love them more than I ever could. Help me remember that and have confidence in Your plan for them. Help them to understand this today, to have confidence in You alone, and to feel Your power and love in tangible ways.
  2. Sound Mind
God, in a world full of confusion and worry, 2 Timothy 1:7 says that You have "not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." Help my child not to give in to the pressures and anxieties of the world, but to focus on Your love and the power You have given them. Help them to have a sound mind and a love for the people around them. Ground them and keep them steady in You.
  3. Body Image
God, we have a tendency to look at ourselves and see every way we come up short. Help my child not to do that, but to believe what Psalm 139:14 says that they are “fearfully and wonderfully made” in YOUR image. When they look at themselves, help them see how You have blessed them. Help them understand Your grace and how You fill the gaps wherever they feel they are not enough. Help them to have confidence in themselves and to believe You made them specifically, intentionally, and intricately.
  4. Wisdom
Proverbs 2:6 says, “The Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” God, please give an abundance of wisdom to my child. Give them wisdom about You, about how to handle situations they find themselves in, and about what the right thing to do in any given situation is. When they are unsure of something, help them remember to ask You for help and to rely on You.
  5. Priorities
God, In today's world, there are a thousand things vying for my child’s attention. Matthew 6:33 says to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Please help my child seek You and Your righteousness today and every day of their life. I pray that my child would love You with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength, as You have commanded us in your Word (Mark 12:29-31). I pray that they would love You first, know Your love for them personally, and love those around them with the same love You show them.

The bottom line is this: when you pray Scripture over your child, you align your prayers with God’s heart for your child. Rest assured that God loves your child even more than you do and has a good plan for their life. He longs to answer our prayers when we pray in accordance with His Word and His will. Whenever you feel anxious about your children, let that be a cue to come to Him with your feelings and lay all your concerns at His feet. No matter what you feel or what they’ve done, God loves you and your child, knows you both deeply, and wants you to trust Him. He is our refuge and strength. Keep running to Him.
